Is there a hidden molten rock at the core of the Moon? – Times of India

The latest study by NASA brought some exciting and remarkable possibilities to light about the interior of the moon. According to the discovery made, a layer of molten rock might have been hidden beneath the solid surface of the moon. This discovery could significantly shift our understanding of celestial neighbors.
The influence of tidal forces
Similar to Earth’s oceans’ response to the gravitational pull of both the Moon and the Sun, the Moon itself experiences tidal forces. These forces produce small, shape-changing effects and minor changes in the gravity of the Moon, offering important information about its core structure. In contrast to Earth, these effects would be dynamic from our perspective, but still notably informative.
Comprehensive data analysis over a year
Previously, research on tidal interactions with the Moon was mostly conducted over shorter periods, whereas, the latest study depends on a massive amount of information collected over one entire year by NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) and gathered by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which offered scientists a significantly improved ability to understand the variations in lunar gravity and shape changes than was previously possible.

Insights into the structural composition
Combining all the one-year data, which researchers did with previously available information about the general density of the Moon, resulted in the creation of models that will offer a clearer understanding of its inner composition. It is backed by observation that shows a softer layer at the base of the mantle of the Moon and this could shed light on some of the gravitational data found, with a molten layer expected to be found deep inside.
Theories regarding composition and heat structure
If there is indeed a molten layer, then it is believed that it might consist of ilmenite- – the mineral that is rich in titanium. However, the question remains how it sustains this liquid state. Knowing sources of heat that sustain it in a liquid state would be the major requirement for further studies.

Further exploration
Exploring the Moon’s interior will help us uncover its hidden details. By studying gravity measurements, we can learn about what the Moon is made of and how things work below its surface. This research is important for understanding the Moon’s secrets.
