It involves not only listening to what they say but also being fully present and empathetic, making an effort to understand their emotions and point of view.
2. Choose “I” words instead of “You” words
When it’s your turn to speak, choose words that convey more emotions than assertions. For example, when feeling frustrated, exhausted and overburdened, say, “I feel overwhelmed when I have to handle everything alone,” instead of “You never help me with any work.” This approach encourages open communication that is free from guilt.
3. Shift your perspective
Seek to understand rather than be understood. Consider your reaction if you were in their place. Acknowledge their feelings. Simple statements such as “I understand why this is upsetting for you” can help pacify a rough situation and open doors for communication and resolution.

4. Agree to disagree
It’s crucial to understand that a conflicting situation may not always have one definite winner. Recognizing that people see things based on their worldview is sometimes the best thing to do. Saying something like, “I completely understand your point of view, even though I may not agree,” could help you find mutual understanding and peace faster.
5. Maintain emotional control
Arguments that get heated can turn into futile conversations. So, set healthy limits on discussions and take a break if you need to. Using the phrase “Let’s pause and come back to this later” can help keep emotional outbursts from getting in the way of the conversation and give everyone the time they need to heal, and come back with a fresh perspective.
