The world had to say goodbye to an extraordinary life as John Alfred Tinniswood, the world’s oldest man, passed away at the age of 112. His family confirmed that he died on Monday at the Southport care home where he spent his final years. Mr Tinniswood was born on August 26, 1912, the year Titanic sank.
John Alfred Tinniswood lived for 112 years, witnessing significant events in modern history such as two world wars and the terms of 24 British prime ministers. Born to Ada and John Bernard Tinniswood, his early years were influenced by the difficulties and transitions of the twentieth century.
Mr Tinniswood became the UK’s oldest man in 2020 and was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest man in April 2024, following the death of Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, who passed at 114. His status as a supercentenarian drew global admiration and attention.

Mr Tinniswood was a devoted family man. A widower, he leaves behind his daughter, Susan, as well as grandchildren Annouchka, Marisa, Toby, and Rupert, and great-grandchildren Tabitha, Callum, and Nieve, as reported by BBC News.
In an emotional letter, his family described him as a person with “many fine qualities.” They praised him as brilliant, brave, determined, calm in a crisis, and brilliant with maths. “He was also a great conversationalist,” they said, recalling his ability to hook people with wit and kindness.
During World War II, Mr Tinniswood served in the Royal Army Pay Corps, showcasing his dedication to his country. His family believes that his intelligence and calm demeanour served him well during these years of military service.
When asked about his secret to longevity, Mr Tinniswood attributed his long life to little more than sheer luck and a reasonably active lifestyle during his younger days. In his own words, “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”
His family stated that Mr Tinniswood spent his final day surrounded by music and love, an appropriate farewell to a man who valued life. He was a lifelong Liverpool football supporter who remained energetic and active into his later years.
