Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are set to align in a spectacular display in the night sky. “January is an excellent time to observe the planets,” shared EarthSky astronomer John Goss in a video on the platform. This celestial phenomenon, known as a planetary parade or alignment, occurs when several planets in our solar system appear to form a line from our vantage point on Earth. While the visible arrangement of the planet is a beautiful sight, it is neither a rare nor irregular event, something out of the ordinary. What is a planetary parade?
Parade of planets is a phrase people use when two or more planets are visible in the night sky. However, NASA has specified that it is not an astronomical term. So why is the term “planet parade” being used in 2025? The reason lies in the stunning visibility of several planets. Jupiter shines brightly, while Venus and Mars are reaching their peak brilliance in the post-sunset sky for the first time in years. With Saturn still prominently visible and Mercury making occasional appearances, four or five planets can easily be spotted with the naked eye, creating a captivating celestial spectacle.
When to watch it?
Beginning on January 21 and reaching its peak around January 29, this breathtaking phenomenon will continue to be visible until mid-February. However, as per reports, in March, Mercury will briefly join the planetary parade for a few days, completing the lineup of all seven planets in the solar system, excluding Earth. However, observing Mercury will be difficult due to its small size and its proximity to the Sun.
Where and how to watch it?
Numerous observatories and parks across the US are organizing special events for the Planet Parade. The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, the Hayden Planetarium in New York, and the McDonald Observatory in Texas will provide telescope sessions to offer visitors the best possible view of this celestial event.
