What would you do if you were kite surfing in the sea and suddenly spotted someone drowning? That’s exactly what happened to Brazilian Olympic kite surfer Bruno Lobo, who recently turned hero while testing his new camera. The Paris 2024 Olympian was training off the coast of São Luís, Brazil, on Friday, January 10, when cries for help caught his attention.
Using his kiteboarding gear, Lobo immediately swam toward the woman, who appeared to be on the verge of giving up. With his quick thinking, he calmed her down, helped her onto his back, and used his equipment to bring her safely to shore. Lifeguards, who were waiting, later provided further assistance.
Bruno Lobo recounts the incident
The incredible rescue, captured on his new camera, highlights not only Lobo’s athletic prowess but also his bravery and quick decision-making. “The day God used me as an instrument to save this young woman— all honor and glory to Him,” Lobo said in an Instagram post.
A two-time Pan American Games champion in the Formula Kite Class and an orthopedic doctor, Lobo later shared the video, giving his followers insight into the incident: “After sailing a few meters, I heard a cry for help and quickly approached the girl who was drowning. I calmed her and asked her to climb onto my back. She was exhausted and powerless. Using my equipment, I brought her safely to shore.”
Rescued woman expresses gratitude
Soon after the video went viral, the woman expressed her gratitude in a heartfelt comment on Lobo’s post. She said, “Words can’t describe my gratitude! It was the salvation that God and my guides sent to me. I couldn’t have survived five more minutes in the sea, even knowing how to swim. Wishing you showers of blessings in your life!”
His bravery has since inspired many online with many using the phrase “Not all heroes wear capes”, further cementing his status as a role model on and off the water.
