Asia is home to a variety of Rotis, each reflecting the region’s unique culture and culinary traditions. They are made not just for sustenance but to bring communities together, nourish families, and complement the vibrant flavours of traditional dishes. Often paired with a variety of curries, dals and sabzis, a roti is something that not just fills your stomach but provides energy as well. Often the size of a normal roti is between 6-7 inches.
However, recently a video is going viral which has garnered over 12 crore views till now, which is the size of a blanket. You might say it’s big enough to satisfy a person’s hunger after eating three to four pieces. The video was shared by an Instagram user @youcreatorzee and it shows a person making these gigantic rotis which are measured somewhere between 10-12 feet in diameter.
In the viral video, one can see a person preparing a massive roti in the kitchen of an event. This roti is so large that it can satisfy the hunger of an entire family. The person starts by rolling out a giant ball of dough, then stretches it in the air, waving it around as if it were a piece of fabric. The pan used to cook this roti is also unique—shaped like a rolling pin and quite large. Over the fire below, the person spreads the roti across the pan like a saree and begins cooking it. Remarkably, despite its size, the roti cooks quickly. Watching the video, you might find your eyes widening in amazement.
What type of roti is this?
This type of roti is usually called Manda or Mande and is made from refined flour and is essentially a larger version of Rumali roti. These rotis are generally prepared for Muslim weddings and made in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. These are typically eaten with a special kind of lentil dish or meat-based korma. The video of this enormous roti has gained significant traction on social media, sparking a wave of user reactions.
Social media users have offered a variety of amusing reactions. One user commented, “Blankets this size are sold online!”
Another wrote, “Our family could eat this roti for a month.”
Meanwhile, someone else remarked, “It looks impressive, but the method of making it doesn’t seem very hygienic.”
